Silence is Golden

Great article about New York taking steps to reduce the noise levels in the city. San Diego could take some queues, especially regarding barking dogs.

Not mentioned, though a constant irritant downtown San Diego, are car alarms and motorcycles. A car alarm should alert people when it's being broken into -- not when other vehicles drive by, something flies over, or when Silly Sally forgets to deactivate it before getting in. These hair-trigger alarms have not only devalued their usefulness in general, but are a constant nag in the urban landscape.

Police officers, and possibly even meter maids, observing an alarm going off for any reason other than an actual intrusion should be able to write up a noise ticket.

Most motorcycles are also way too loud. If a cop can clearly hear a motorcycle engine more than 2 or 3 blocks away, noise ticket!

Amen! Also the idea that louder motorcycles are safer is also BS. Between my engine noise, the AC, the stereo and the 70mph highway wind, it's impossible to hear approaching motorcycles until they're already past you anyway, no matter how loud they are.

These guys modify their bikes to be louder because they're insecure and want attention -- that's it. I don't need to be woken up at 2am because some biker has to compensate for his small penis.

I agree, simplify the noise laws so they're enforceable and give them tickets!

One of the biggest noise producers downtown is the "Downtown Partnership" itself! I'm all for clean streets, but pressure washing with a huge air compresser between 3-5AM doesn't help our quality of life.

They are well in violation of the noise limits, but they have special variances. The city clearly doesn't care about people living downtown.
